Manila Observatory and CCARPH Climate Scientists Help Warn of Climate “Code Red”

Congratulations to CCARPH-MO scientists Dr. Gemma Narisma, Dr. Faye Cruz, and Dr. Laurice Jamero, on the release of the Working Group I contribution to the 6th Assessment Report of the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)!

Dr. Narisma (Coordinating Lead Author – Atlas Chapter), Dr. Cruz ( Lead Author – Chapter 12), and Dr. Jamero (Contributing Author and Chapter Scientist – Atlas Chapter), all of whom are Work Package leaders for CCARPH and climate scientists from the Manila Observatory, helped write the latest climate change report, released last August 9, 2021. More than 14,000 scientific publications were reviewed by a 234-member team of international scientists and climate experts from around the world. The sobering report provided the most up-to-date understanding of the physical science of climate change, and the role humans have played in these changes. The report was released ahead of the 26th Conference of Parties slated to be held in Glasgow later this year.

In honor of her legacy, memory, and significant contribution, the Working Group I dedicated the Atlas Chapter and the Interactive Atlas tool to Dr. Narisma, who passed away last 5 March 2021. The interactive Atlas Tool may be found in this link: https://interactive-atlas.ipcc.ch/

Dr. Rosa Perez, also from CCARPH-MO, meanwhile, is one of the lead authors of IPCC Working Group II (Impacts, Adaptation and Vulnerability), and their contribution to the Assessment Report is scheduled to be released early next year. She was also one of the authors who prepared the IPCC Special Report on Global Warming of 1.5oC at the start of the AR6 cycle and launched in 2018.

The IPCC report, which raises a “code red for humanity”, is available for download at this link: https://www.ipcc.ch/report/ar6/wg1/#SPM
